After earning a master's degree in library science from the University of Texas at Austin, she became a librarian. Bush met his future husband, George W. Bush, in 1977, and they got married later that year. The couple had two twin daughters in 1981. Bush's political involvement began during his marriage. She campaigned with her husband in his failed 1978 campaign for the US Congress, and then for his successful campaign as governor of Texas. As First Lady of Texas, Bush implemented a number of initiatives focused on health, education, and literacy.
