Oscar Grant III is a 22-year-old African-American man who was killed by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California in the early morning hours of New Years Day 2009. In response to reports of a scuffle on a crowded Bay Area train returning from San Francisco, BART agents arrested Grant and several other passengers on the platform at Fruitvale BART station. BART officer Anthony Pirone knelt on Grant's head and forced the unarmed Grant to lie face down on the podium. While Pirone held Grant on his stomach, Mehserle pulled out a pistol and shot Grant in the back. Grant was taken to Oakland Highland Hospital and was declared dead later that day. Events are recorded on a number of official and private digital videos and private mobile cameras. The owners have released their images to the various media and websites they have spread. Peaceful and violent protests took place in the following days.
